چکیده

The ecological and environmental conditions in semiarid areas are closely linked to landscape dynamics. This study examined the seasonal vegetation activities of landscape classes and dynamics in the Loess Plateau in North Shaanxi Province, China. Landscape dynamics were studied by comparing Landsat images in 1987 and 2007, and classified as landscape transitions, landscape variations and unchanged landscape. The characteristics of seasonal vegetation activities, such as dates for onset-of-greenness, peaks, and onset-of-senescence for landscapes were determined using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) 10-day vegetation index composite products (2002–2009). The landscape dynamics showed that some sloping croplands were converted to woodlands and grasslands. Vegetation activities responded diversely and seasonally to landscape classes and dynamics. Temporal analysis of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) showed that the time of onset-of-greenness and onset-of-senescence were similar for all major landscape classes, while the time of peak vegetation activity was longer for tree than grass species. The analysis of seasonal vegetation activities and landscape dynamics indicated that seasonal vegetation activities were not only relative to landscape classes, but also affected by landscape dynamics.

The Loess Plateau

The Loess Plateau (34°–40°N, 103°–114°E) is situated in the northern part of Central China (Fig. 2.1). It borders on North China Plain in the east, adjoins Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the west, stands in the north of Qinling Mountains, and neighbors Inner Mongolia Plateau in the north. The Loess Plateau is a part of the dryland region in northwest China, with its altitude in the range of 800–3000 ...

Ecologically asynchronous agricultural practice erodes sustainability of the Loess Plateau of China.

Sustainability of agricultural landscapes depends largely on land-use practices. As one of the most productive and widespread agricultural soils, loess is often deep and easily eroded, posing grand challenges for environmental sustainability around the world. One prime example is the Loess Plateau of China, which has been cultivated for more than 7500 years. Based on long-term data sets, this s...

The Impacts of Weather and Conservation Programs on Vegetation Dynamics in China's Loess Plateau

We present an analysis of the impacts of weather change and large-scale vegetation conservation programs on the vegetation dynamics in China’s Loess Plateau from 2000 through 2009. We employed a multiple lines of evidence approach in which multi-scale data were used. We employed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MO...

Soil nutrient assessment based on attribute recognition model in the Loess Plateau of China

Soil fertility is important factors for growth and productivity of vegetation. The relationship between vegetation and soil fertility deserves attention due to its scientific importance and practical applications. However, the effects of soil fertility on vegetation development and succession are poorly documented. Here we study soil fertility in Yanhe watershed at northern Shaanxi on five diff...
